When What's Right Isn't What's 'Smart'

When What's Right Isn't What's 'Smart'

Sometimes it seems we run into a conflict between what feels right and what seems smart.  How do you handle it when you get an inkling to do something that  doesn't make much sense?

Like saying yes to the guy who isn't the type you pictured marrying?  Or walking away from a successful career to volunteer in the third world?  Or ignoring doctor's orders to create your own alternative path to healing?

I've been talking with Masters of Creation this month about that very topic, and why it's important that we better hear and honor inner guidance.  Especially when it says something that isn't logical.

It's easy for our rational, practical, realistic minds to put the kibosh to an idea that seems risky or might make us look silly.

So of course when my Inner Guidance got all lit up about lowering my coaching rates, my gremlins had a heyday.

  • “That's crazy!”
  • “What will that do to your income?  To your reputation?!”
  • “Why would you drop rates when you already have more business than you can book?”
  • “Master Coaches don't charge new coach fees!”
  • “You are a really bad business person.”

My gremlins are such bossy know-it-alls!  But that's okay.  I know who to listen to.

And so it is I am walking the talk and honoring inner guidance, even when it doesn't make “sense” or seem very smart.  One of the ways that's come up recently is indeed to significantly drop my one on one coaching rates.  (To levels they haven't been in years!)

No ulterior motive.  No big plans about how this wisely fits into my overall business intentions.

Doesn't make much sense, and I guarantee I didn't ask my marketing or business coaches what they thought.  Just letting that inside voice lead the way.

I believe it's more important than ever that we establish a strong connection with the part of us that guides best, and then come up with the chutzpah to honor its instructions.

What is your inside voice asking for?  Are you listening or dismissing?  Are you letting it lead or ignoring it into silence?

If you're wondering the best way to hear that inner guidance, I'd offer this:

It starts by knowing it's there, and then getting quiet enough to hear it.  It may speak to you in signs, dreams, through your body compass, or simply a knowing or "felt" sense within.  Maybe you'll best find it by going on a shamanic journey, or journaling, or inviting it into conversation in the shower.  Meditation is a standard practice among those in the know about how to best facilitate this inner guidance.  I'd like to say I practice that all the time, but I'd be a big fat liar.

However you do it, my suggestion is that you listen better than you ever have, and get braver than you've ever been to follow it.  Even - or especially! - when it says something "ridiculous."  :)

PS - this doesn't mean I'm taking on more clients than I already work with - that feels right still and it isn't very many.  It just means it's cheaper than ever to work with me one on one, for those who make it to my client roster.

If you happen to be in the market for an excellent Good Vibe coach who is also ridiculously reasonable to work with, we'll soon have our first graduates listed at Good Vibe Coach Academy.  (Email me in the meantime for direct referrals.)

PPS - seriously, listen to what your inner voice is saying.  Right now it has a brilliant idea or suggestion or piece of advice for you.  Listen for it, and you'll be glad you did.
