Laboring for Love

Laboring for Love

Two things guaranteed to make me cry every time I see them: jet cars at Rocky Mountain Raceway, and the international sheepdog trials at Soldier Hollow, which we just got back from.

Sitting on the hot bleachers after a greasy slice of pizza, Russ making shade with the umbrella in near 90 degree heat, wasps and grasshoppers buzzing the crowd, I turned to my sweetie as we waited for the next competitive team to begin and said,“This is my idea of a good time.”

He laughed because not everyone can find joy in an event like this.

But watching these border collies do their thing with the sheep under the tutelage of their handlers is better than Christmas.  To me

These border collies are in their element!  Even though they're working their butts off on this hot summer day, running these sheep all over the mountain side through gates, around poles and into pens, this is what they were bred for.  It's what they love most: to do the work they were meant to do.

In animal rescue we see a lot of border collie mixes given up because of living challenges when they're not allowed to do what they're made for.  In coaching I see it in people as well - folks who suffer needlessly simply because they haven't found a way to do what they love most

On this Labor Day holiday here in the states, it struck me that we would all be so lucky to have the opportunity these particular sheepdogs do - to spend our time doing what we love most.  Honing our skills, developing our expertise, and living our daimon, as the Greeks would say.

Doing what we love doesn't mean we don't sweat buckets or use a few swear words in the field or run across new challenges.  It means we often get our hands dirty, and grow as we overcome obstacles, and feel exhilarated in the process.

If you're not doing what you were meant to do; or if you don't know what that might be for you, I invite you to open to discovery now.

Steve Jobs says ,“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

There are lots of ways to unite with your passion - including at GVU where Kim Falconer helps reveal it in in your birth chart, where Lisa Alessi guides you to Connect with Your Why, where Pernille Madsen helps us get unstuck, where Laura Gevanter introduces us to the power of deciding, and many more LOA-friendly resources to embrace your life's passion.

For coaches, we also have a training program to help you love your work more, just to make sure you don't build an empire that you fantasize about walking away from.

Or if you'd like 1-1coaching to manifest your ideal work, we're graduating our first round of LOA trained coaches very soon at Good Vibe Coach Academy.  Email me for a custom referral to a good vibe trained coach.  (Yay!)

Regardless of how you're enjoying your Labor Day (or your September, if you're outside the U.S.), I am holding thoughts of and visualizing more and more of you finding your way to work that you love.  To work that you would do for free because you love it so much, but that also makes you a very nice living.

Here's to happy employment for all of us - the kind that is so profound it could bring a bystander to tears of joy.  Happy “Labor” Day!
